RUB Hanmun Summer School in August 2026 (Bochum)
The Korean Studies department at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is pleased
to announce its first Hanmun Summer School dedicated to pre-modern
Korean language and literature. Over four days of intensive instruction,
participants will explore the world of Hanmun and gain a basic knowledge
of this important literary language of pre-modern Korea through engaging
lectures, guided exercises, and carefully selected teaching materials.
By the end of the program, students will have built a basic grammatical
foundation following the "Practical Hanmun" model, developed the skills
to read basic texts, and gained a richer understanding of Hanmun as a
key skill for researching the Korean literary tradition. No prior
knowledge of Hanmun or Hancha is required (even though a basic knowledge
of Hancha is helpful).
The language of instruction is English.
Students will be introduced to the e-Learning System for Hanmun at RUB
and will be able to use this system to solidify their knowledge of
Hanmun by self-learning after the Summer School. Access to the
self-learning system is free of charge.
The Summer School will be led by an internationally experienced team of
instructors: Prof. Dr. Diana Yüksel (University of Bucharest), Prof. Dr.
Barbara Wall (University of Copenhagen), Prof. Dr. Felix Siegmund (Ruhr
University Bochum) and Imane Massaadi (Ruhr University Bochum).
We warmly invite faculty to share this opportunity with students
interested in pre-modern Korean studies.
