Synopsis:

When Colin Marshall’s first book 한국 요약 금지 (or No Summarizing Korea) came out this past February, it became a surprise bestseller, not least to the author himself. Its essays on various aspects of Korean culture — from its film and literature to its cities and architecture to its language and trends — have drawn a great deal of attention from Korean readers and the Korean media. But what does it mean for a foreigner to write about Korea for Koreans, and what can a foreigner write that most satisfies, fascinates, or shocks a Korean readership? The experience of writing the book, and more so of giving interviews about it, has revealed some answers to these questions, many of them unexpected.
