Berlin Forum on Korea – Next Generation Panel

(Conference Date: 19-21 November 2025; Venue: Freie Universität Berlin - Germany)

Application deadline: 14 October 2025

Presentation paper (around 5 pages) submission: 1 November 2025

The Korea Europe Center at Freie University Berlin invites applications from young scholars and early-career researchers to present their research or policy papers in Berlin at the Next Generation Panel of this year’s Berlin Forum on Korea conference.

Theme

This year’s Forum takes place under the overarching theme of “Korea at a Crossroads”. We particularly welcome contributions that critically engage with the Korean peace process in light of the legacies, principles, and lessons of Helsinki and Bandung. Papers may address, but are not limited to:

  • Comparative perspectives on multilateralism, peace, and reconciliation.
  • Lessons from European and Asian peace frameworks for the Korean Peninsula.
  • The role of international solidarity and non-alignment in shaping peace processes.
  • Normative, diplomatic, or security dimensions of Korea’s pursuit of peace.
  • Innovative policy recommendations for future inter-Korean relations.

Opportunity

Selected participants will present their work at the Berlin Forum on Korea conference before a diverse audience of scholars, diplomats, and policymakers. They will receive direct feedback from senior experts and veteran policymakers, making this an invaluable platform to connect academic research with practice. The KEC will also support[1] travel and accommodation costs. Successful applicants also have the opportunity to publish their full paper in a special issue of the Korea Europe Review Journal after the conference.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be young scholars, early-career researchers, or advanced graduate students.
  • Submissions may take the form of academic articles or policy papers.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstract (max. 300 words) and short bio (max. 150 words).
  • CV
  • Optional: presentation or paper draft, if available
  • All materials must be submitted in English.

  • Application Deadline: 14 October 2025
  • Notification of Acceptance: End of October 2025
